A Night at the Royal Albert Hall
A Night at the Royal Albert Hall
A Night at the Royal Albert Hall, London (2024)
I wanted to share an incredibly unique experience I recently had—a rare and magical moment being the lone person standing in such a vast space full of energy: the Royal Albert Hall.
The evening began with me sitting quietly, watching a full orchestra fill the hall with so much beauty it felt as though the space might burst. It was mesmerising, watching the music take shape and transform the energy of the room. Later, as people streamed out of the hall, content and happier for what they had experienced, I stayed behind.
Once the audience had left, I returned with my easel, finding an entirely new energy in the space. At first, there was the buzz of activity, with workers seamlessly transitioning the stage and arena for the next show. But then, between 4am and 5 a.m., the hall entered a rare state of stillness. It was just me, standing in the most focused state I’ve ever experienced, occasionally pulling back to pinch myself and soak in the wonder of it all.
For my second night of drawing, I had the honor of being joined by the incredible organist Anna Lapwood. In essence, Anna became a part of the artwork itself—her playing breathed life and energy into the space. Her mastery of the organ, and the way she brought its voice alive, was electrifying. Every note she played infused the hall and my drawing with a new layer of emotion and vibrancy. It was a true collaboration, and one I’ll never forget.
